Gerardo Castro - About Me

Past

I grew up in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. It is located about 2 hours south of border with San Diego, CA. It is a beautiful small, sleepy, comfortable and peaceful beach town right next to Valle de Guadalupe! In my early teens, I moved to San Diego, CA with my Dad. I enrolled at Hiltop summer school and Chula Vista Junior High. I really have good memories of that time, as it was my first time experience living in the USA! I enjoyed every bit of it while I lived in Chula Vista, CA, although it was brief; One of my favorite times during the day, was getting breakfast and lunch at school! I could not believe we get foods such as cinammon rolls, pizza, hamburger, milk carton etc... All your fun and favorite junk and good healthy food, of course. I loved getting my food card stamped! I enjoyed very much Chula Vista Junior High, the instructors, the food, the streets, the weather, the Chula Vista libray where I studied and learned English - I remember that so vividly. Third avenue street was my favorite street, the old movie theater there, the fog in the morning while walking to school, I was really happy to experience all this. After my brief time in Chula Vista, we moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where I made some great memories too and completed my middle, high school and later on college at UNLV (University of Nevada, Las Vegas), earning a degree in Business Administration - Accounting. But I always missed Chula Vista so much that I was fortunate enough to move back in August 2014.

Present

Presently, after having worked for 6+ years as accountant at a local legal non-profit office, I decided I want to go back to school and study computer information systems or computer science. Specifically, I am pursuing certificates of proficiency in web design and computer programming. I just want to improve my computer skills in general, besides MS Excel. I am having such a great time now, getting my hands dirty with courses such as HTML/CSS, C++, Python, Photoshop and Linux system administration. I love it because I can complete these certificates in a year or so, which will be this May 2025! This opportunity has sparked my interest to pursue more IT related courses and for now I am still in exploration mode with these subjects.

Future

My future educational goals are to increase my confidence and upgrade my skills in computer information technology or computer science and get some job experince with these new skills. Specifically, I would like to learn SQL, JavaScript and become better at web design and computer programming. I am amazed at the flexibilty of working remotely or online and be able to plan my own schedule. Because of this, for my future career goal, I would like to have my own business one day or work remotely from anywhere in the world! Perhaps, do web design and computer programming as well as use my skills learned as an accountant. For now, I am enjoying learning all I can about IT skills and computer programming. I would like to pursue more training and education opportunities. Also, I am interested in taking some foreign language courses for traveling or expand my job opportunities such as Italian or Chinese. For the record, this is my first website!

Something else about me, my hobbies!!

Dancing

Salsa Dancing

I enjoy dancing! Currently, I go out dancing salsa and bachata styles at various venues locally such as Downtown, Pacific Beach or North Park. These venues usually charge around $15 per 1 hour class and then you can stay for social dancing after. My previous experience with dancing has been ballroom dancing, which includes tango, swing, chacha or bolero at Balboa Park dancers with the older folks.

Classical Guitar

Guitar

Another favorite hobbie of mine is playing classical guitar! I am excited that I have registered with VillaMusica school of Music to begin playing with a great group of people in the classical guitar ensemble, where we share and play music together. This activity definitely helps me in improving my playing and staying motivated. Playing at home is fine too but the ultimate goal of playing music is to share it with others! Some day, I would like to play some of my favorite all time composers/songs. In order of preference:

  1. Agustin Barrios - Un sueno en la floresta
  2. Johann Sebastian Bach - Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068:II Air
  3. John Dowland - Fantasie 2

Electronic Music

EDM

I love listening to electronic music! some of my favorite composers - songs are:
